1. Sweet Orange Essential Oil

We’ve all heard of (and probably experienced to some extent) ‘winter blues’, but for some this condition is more extreme. Diffusing your room with sweet orange oil helps to put you in a cheery, bright mood – just like the fruits it comes from!

To set a happy tone in your home, and help remove nasty winter germs from the air at the same time, add 2 drops each of orange essential oil and peppermint essential oil to around 70 ml water and add to a diffuser. Set up the diffuser in the room you spend most time in, and let the happy, summery feelings spread through you. Diluted sweet orange oil can also be rubbed on your chest or back, or added to your bath.

Note: all citrus oils are photosensitive, meaning that they make you sensitive to UV rays. Never use orange essential oil on your skin if it isn’t diluted, and try to limit your time in the sun after use.

2. Peppermint Essential Oil

Because it’s known to give you energy, you might not want to diffuse it where you sleep – but in the kitchen, it’s perfect for those sluggish, rainy mornings. Peppermint oil can also help relieve symptoms of sinus headaches, cold and flu, so it’s good news for winter. You can use peppermint oil in a diffuser, nasal inhaler, or simply rub it on your chest, neck, or back, but make sure it is sufficiently diluted. Putting a drop of peppermint oil under your pillow before you go to sleep can further help to fight off midnight coughing attacks.

3. Lavender Essential Oil

Add a few drops of lavender essential oil to your bath and allow yourself to just be. It’s exactly what you need to unwind after a tiring, stressful day. Not only does it calm you down, but lavender oil is also great for opening your nasal passages and has a hydrating effect when applied to your skin, so you don’t suffer from those dry, flaky patches.

4. Frankincense Essential Oil

You might tell me that coughing and wheezing are just a part of winter that we have to accept. That we just have to try and get on with our lives as best as we can, until spring comes to relieve us. But it isn’t true! There are simple solutions, and they don’t have to involve drugging yourself up with OTC medication for three months straight.

Frankincense oil has a deep woodsy smell and when rubbed on your chest and throat can help relieve respiratory issues. It also acts as a shield, protecting you from getting sick altogether, since it’s a natural anti-bacterial. And like lavender, adding it to your bath or having it in a diffuser can also alleviate stress and help you calm down when things get stressful.

5. Eucalyptus Essential oil

It’s well-known that eucalyptus oil is great news for colds and coughs. Well, I mean, it’s not great news for the cold or cough, but it’s great news for the person suffering from them! For decongesting, add a couple drops eucalyptus oil to a bowl of hot, steamy water, put a towel over your head and inhale. The antiviral and antibacterial properties of the oil will take care of any cold. You can also add a few drops to your bath with Epsom salts to ease those achy winter muscles.
