Top 5 Purple Shampoos Reviewed 2020

Post Image

Purple shampoo has been the savior of blondes for years. Whether you have subtly highlighted blonde hair, or you’re completely platinum, purple shampoo always has your back. While it’s true that every blonde needs a good purple shampoo, the question comes down to this – which one is best? It’s a pretty important question, but when it comes down to it, you are the only person who can determine which one is best for you.

It completely depends on what kind of hair you have and your own personal preferences. Below, you’ll find my personal favorite top 5 purple shampoos for blondes, and you’ll get to hear the differences between them – and then you can decide which one sounds best for you. Let’s dive right into it.

1. Clairol Shimmer Lights Purple Shampoo

Coming in at number 1 is my personal favorite, Clairol Shimmer lights purple shampoo. It’s specifically formulated for blonde and silver hair. If you’re like me and have platinum blonde hair, this is by far the most effective shampoo for the best price.

I found this to be the most effective for my hair because it has such a strong formula. It’s tinted a very dark purple and actually smells pretty good. When it comes to purple shampoo, it’s often hard to find a scent that cancels out the smell of so many added chemicals, but I have to say that this shampoo is the best one I’ve smelled yet. It has a thick texture, and because of that it’s a little bit harder to rinse out, but if you leave it in for 3-5 minutes it should be fine. You can see the results right after your shower! Love it, and love that I don’t even need to wait to see that it’s working.

This is a product which I highly recommend to all my fellow blondes. It enhances my blonde platinum color into looking a lot more vibrant than it ever has. In addition, it also deep cleans the hair, which makes it look and feel healthier automatically. I always think of this shampoo as a toner but it’s not just that.

It’s a shampoo that enhances and removes any unwanted color in the blonde or silver, which is exactly what most people are looking for when they search for the best purple shampoo.  I have not yet found a product like this that works so effectively on my platinum hair. This is a big reason why Shimmer Lights is used in so many hair salons world wide. You can find this product sold on Amazon for as low as $10.17 for a 16  oz bottle, and it is well worth it!

2. John Freida Sheer Blonde Colour Renew Purple Shampoo

My second choice of purple shampoo would have to be John Freida Colour Renew shampoo for blondes. This formula is specifically made for highlighted blondes or even two-toned blondes, but it also works just fine with regular blonde hair as well.

The formula used in this shampoo has Optical Brightening Technology, and is able to absorb UV lights and emit white-blue light, making color-treated hair appear brighter than ever before. Something that I specifically love about this shampoo is that it really protects your color. I’ve unfortunately noticed with a lot of other purple shampoos that they sometimes change my color and shift it to something I didn’t want. John Frieda’s purple shampoo can make sure to get rid of the unwanted brassy tones, and that’s it – it will otherwise leave your blonde color just as you want it.

My experience with this shampoo was good, but the product itself is hard to find and not sold everywhere. When a girl is in a brassy crisis, she needs her product on hand! That being said, I definitely would recommend this shampoo to anyone with moderate brassy tones. When I used it, I had to wait at least 2 to 3 times until I saw a big difference in my hair, but once it started working it did work very well!

I didn’t love the smell and the texture was definitely more on the looser side, but it was easy to rinse out and didn’t stain my hands (major plus!). John Freida products are generally pretty expensive so I try and stay away from them, but I found this shampoo to be really cheap! On Amazon it sells for as low as $7.74 for a 8.45 oz bottle! Usually it sells for $21.63 so Amazon is most certainly the best place to buy it if you’re interested.

3. Joico Color Endure Violet Shampoo

I would have to give spot number 3 to Joico Color Endure Violet Shampoo. I used this shampoo the longest and had a good experience until I found the other ones which I loved even more. This specific formulated shampoo is for toning and blonde or grey hair. While I do not (yet) have grey hair, I do know from other people that it does wonders. So for anyone with silver or grey hair – this is definitely the way to go.

Although it says “violet” on the bottle, the shade is definitely more of a dark purple. The shampoo is made from a strong formula that gets the job done. Surprisingly enough, even though the consistency of the shampoo is a little bit thick, it actually rinses out pretty easily (unlike some of the other shampoos listed here) – which is probably why I used it for so long. This Joico shampoo doesn’t have a specific attractive smell to it, but to be fair, not many purple shampoos do.

Joico is probably one of the more widely known shampoos on the market, and a big reason why is because it’s reasonably priced. It’s one of the middle priced bottles on this list, and that alongside the fact that it really works is a big reason why you’ll find it in so many salons.

You can find it on Amazon currently at roughly 12 bucks for a 10-ounce bottle. They give a lot for a little, and that’s something that really draws me in. Everyone has their preferences, and as for me, I’m definitely a fan of this shampoo!

4. Jhirmack Distinctions Silver Plus Purple Shampoo

colored hair

Despite what many may think, it’s mostly used for people with dyed or highlighted hair.

Number 4 on this list would have to be Jhirmack Distinctions Silver Plus shampoo. Despite what many may think, this is really not just a shampoo for grey hair! In fact, it is mostly used for people with dyed or highlighted hair. I have never used it myself for grey hair per se, but I know from other people that it does work on that front too. It’s formulated to really do the trick! This is for hair that has yellow tones you want to get rid of, and I suspect the Silver Brightening is for hair that is already the right color but can use a boost in vibrancy.

The smell and consistency compared to the rest of these shampoos is pretty much the same, not a great smell but again not too bad. It’s not so thick and it’s still a little bit hard to rinse out, which is why I chose to put it near the bottom of the list. I find that I need to leave this shampoo in for a few minutes longer in order to get the best results. The downside to that is that once I’ve left it in for a certain amount of time, it’s pretty hard to get out. But with that being said, it definitely has immediate effects, and I can see a difference when I come out of the shower.

Priced at $7.39 for a 13.6 oz bottle, this is the cheapest shampoo on this list. You can find it easily at any store or pharmacy, and of course most easily on Amazon. Don’t turn away from the price; just because it’s cheap doesn’t mean it’s not just as effective as the others!

5. Pureology Hydrate Purple Shampoo And Hydrate Conditioner

Last but definitely not least is Pureology Hydrate Shampoo. Don’t be fooled, just because this is at the end of the list doesn’t mean it’s not good. I have tried about 20 different purple shampoos, so that fact that this comes in at number 5 is actually still pretty impressive! Pureology in a nut shell is a concentrated formula for dry color treated hair. It gently cleanses without stripping any color. I think that out of all of the shampoos listed, this one is the best when it comes to color safe formulas.

This is a pretty expensive duo, costing $42.50 for 2 8.5 oz bottles on Amazon, but in salons it’s much more expensive. And as I’m sure you know- you get what you pay for. This is definitely effective, and a shampoo and conditioner set that I would highly recommend. The color of the shampoo is dark purple, like most of the others, and it has a pretty thick texture. This shampoo, as strong as it is, actually smells pretty damn good! Something I love about this shampoo and conditioner is the fact that it makes my hair smooth and silky, and that’s not something you’ll commonly find with the rest.

To wrap it all up I’ll say this – each purple shampoo or conditioner product will have its pros and cons, but when it comes down to it, you have to find which one best works for your hair. True, you’ll find yourself experimenting like a confused teenager, but at the end it’s all worth the wait.
