Tarte Cosmetics Star Products Review 2018: Get a Head Start With Tarte!
Have you ever seen an advertisement featuring a model with perfectly-applied makeup, and wished you could do the same at home? Tarte Cosmetics’ founder, Maureen Kelly, was frustrated that the cosmetic brands were just not delivering on their claims. She decided to make a difference by launching her own easy-to-apply makeup line. Her dream was realized in 1999 and today is the favorite brand of many fans around the world. Don’t yet own any Tarte products? I think I will change that…
Tarte Makeup Company Background and History Explained
Tarte Makeup was started by Maureen Kelly in 1999. Interestingly, she had not planned to go into cosmetics at all, and actually had no cosmetic or business background. This was of course aside from giving out homemade lip glosses as presents to friends and family. As well as producing a sticky concoction of shaving cream and cough syrup as a sort of blush when she was six years old.
Maurine had in fact been studying for a degree in psychology, but at the encouragement of her late first husband, she quit studying and instead decided to devote her energies to launching her own makeup line.
Her lack of business acumen turned out to be her strength. Kelly didn’t like the fact that bigger makeup brands were not using all-natural ingredients. This was something she really believed in. So despite warnings that the ingredients would cost her double the amount – she made the decision to only produce “green” products. This decision proved to be what would make the popularity of her company soar.
As the saying goes, necessity is the mother of invention, and Tarte cosmetics is no exception. Kelly would get very excited by the products she would see advertised. But she would later be let down when she discovered couldn’t apply them in the same fashion at home. She felt that product advertisements were misleading. This propelled her to create her own products that would be easy for the average person to apply on their own.
The history of Tarte is quite impressive. Maureen started her business in her rented apartment, bribing friends and family to help her with pizza and wine. The first store to purchase her products was Henri Bendel, and it’s been uphill ever since. After joining Sephora in 2003, and later on QVC, Tarte makeup products have become standard in makeup stores nationwide.
Tarte Makeup Products Overview
Tarte is a green makeup line that produces all your makeup needs, from actual makeup products to awesome skin care, and even amazing brush sets! You can get their products online, from their website or sites like eBay, and in makeup stores like Sephora.
Tarte Makeup Brushes Review
Okay, so there are quite a few Tarte brushes and brush sets out there, which is why I’m only going to name a few here. Many are limited editions, so you can’t buy them any more from the Tarte website, such as the Make Believe in Yourself set and the Stroke of Midnight set. However, I did find them on eBay, so all hope isn’t lost. There are a couple limited edition brush sets out now, as well as other limited edition items, so visit the Tarte website to see what speaks to you.
Not every makeup line makes their brushes so attractive to the eye. Most of the brushes you see are black, brown or some other traditional color. Not so with Tarte brushes! So let’s talk about the Magic Wands brush set. These are my favorite of the Tarte brush sets, and also pretty new. Admittedly, much of my love for this item, probably has to do with the beautiful colors. If you order a set you’ll know what I’m talking about! I’m a grown woman but I have never grown out of the Disney-princess stage.
My favorite color is still pink, and that’s why I love these brushes so much. The bristles are super-cute shades like light and dark purple, mint green, light blue, and, my favorite, a bubble-gum pink powder brush that fills me with joy. The stems look like a gold, shiny unicorn horn, and the bristles are super soft and great for blending and applying product. They have an awesome foundation brush, and I plan on trying it with the DIY foundation I have recently added to my routine. The packaging is also adorable – the brushes come in a really cute box with Tarte unicorn wrapping paper around the brushes.
Another limited edition set that is currently available is the Back To School Tools Brush Set. I love this one because four of the brushes are double-sided. Again, the bristles are really soft, and I absolutely love the wooden handles and the gold embossed with the Tarte emblem. It has a very different feel to the unicorn-themed Magic Wands set, great if you aren’t super into the girly-thing. This set really encompasses everything you might need in a brush set (plus more, because of the double ends). It’s also a really good price, considering the quality and the amount of brushes you get.
If you’re not into sets, but like to buy all your brushes separately, Tarte also has you covered. They have loads of gorgeous brushes available for your face, eyes and lips. My personal favorite is the Rainforest of the Sea Fan brush. I call this one the Peacock Brush because that’s what it reminds me of. It’s great for highlighting and I love its beautiful two-toned purple and gold handle.
Tarte Makeup Tarteist Pro Amazonian Clay Pallete Review
Tarte has a number of eyeshadow palettes available, but the one with the widest range of colors is the Tarteist PRO Amazonian clay palette. Because of its color diversity, you can create lots of different looks with this palette, for day, night, and everything in between. This is mostly a matte palette which I love, because I’m always looking to increase my matte eyeshadow collection. But shimmer lovers do not despair, there are also a few shimmery colors in there as well.
My favorite color is fierce, which is a soft, light purple color. Looking at the palette now, I’m thinking that chic (a super-light pink shadow) would make an awesome base color against my fair skin. There’s so much you can do with this palette because they were generous with the nudes and base colors. But if you are a wild child, there are enough bolder colors and glittery options for your too.
As for the packaging, 10/10. Seriously, the set has such a beautiful matte black cover with shiny gold lettering which matches the gold interior. Tarte’s products have some of my favorite packaging and the Tarteist Pro Clay palette is seriously a beauty.
Tarte Makeup Amazonian Clay 12- Hour Full Coverage Foundation Review
Also included in Tarte’s Amazonian Clay collection is their 12-Hour Full Coverage Foundation. Firstly, you will definitely find one that matches your skin tone, because it comes in a full range of 25 colors. It has really good coverage, probably due to its thick consistency. But if you want less coverage and more glow, consider mixing it with an oil such as jojoba oil or almond oil. Blending is an absolute pleasure, which is what I’m looking for in a good foundation. It’s especially good for oily skin, and it lasts for ages. Plus, it’s SPF 15, so it’s also helping to keep your skin protected whilst making you look beautiful.
Amazonian Clay 12-Hour Blush Review
I’m not usually a blush girl, but when I saw the awesome reviews that Tarte’s Amazonian clay blushes received, I realized that I should be paying more attention to this product. Because my skin is really light, I don’t like to go too overboard with blush. Of course I go for what gives my skin the most natural flush and that’s why I love the shade Exposed.
The nude-pink shade is a super subtle and natural color for lighter skin tones. It actually works with many different skin tones. I also love that it works with many eye shadow and lip looks, because of its neutral-ish color.
As awesome as Exposed is, it’s far from the only color available in this line. If you like darker blushes, pinky blushes, peachy blushes – there’s a Tarte blush for you. The blushes are really easy to blend and add the perfect touch to your makeover – and they last for the whole day without having to reapply.
Tarte Makeup Shape Tape Contour Concealer Review
The Shape Tape Contour Concealer is a hugely popular item with hundreds of reviews all over the internet. It isn’t hard to see why. It can be used both as a foundation and as a highlighter and contour to enhance areas of your choice. This is often a red flag, as a lot of products that are advertised as having more than one use tend to be lacking in both, but this product is actually a winner.
Shape tape offers excellent coverage and lasts all day. It comes in a variety of fourteen shades. This concealer works especially well to cover up bags under your eyes, and feels great on the skin. It’s also a great value for money, because even a small amount can get you very far. I would definitely recommend it, particularly if you are looking for a hydrating face product that will cover you well and that you won’t have to worry about reapplying.
Is Tarte Makeup Cruelty Free? Does Tarte Makeup Test on Animals?
Good news: Tarte makeup is cruelty free and does not test on animals! They are also not sold in China, which would require them by law to test on animals.
When you go with Tarte, you’re getting a quality product that is really user-friendly and pleasing to the eye. Their makeup selection is beautiful, and it’s impossible not to be drawn in by their original packaging. Like Too Faced, it is a cruelty free brand that’s classy, fun, lasting and always easy, so you can be a model wherever you are.
