With everyone from Britney Spears, to Justin Bieber, to Adam Levine jumping on board, Proactiv is one of the skincare brands that has got us talking. Arguably the leading brand for acne care, though the products may not work for everyone (spoiler alert: no acne products will work for everyone!). In this Proactiv company review, I will discuss how I think Proactiv is definitely worth a try.
Proactiv products tackle a bunch of skin concerns including moderate acne, redness, discoloration, enlarged pores, and excess oil. Their products are not tested on animals, so A+ for being cruelty-free -- and A+ for a host of other factors we will be covering here in our Proactiv Company Review!
Proactiv Company History And Origins
Listed on Forbes’ “America’s Richest Self-Made Women” for two years in a row now, Kathy Fields and Katie Rodan are the kick-ass women who founded the brand and conceptualized the product. They are dermatologists who became fast friends while studying at Stanford University School of Medicine, bonding over their shared love of everything glitz and glam in what was a largely male-dominated field at the time.
As practicing dermatologists, they felt limited by the acne medications that were available. Pharmaceutical companies were only producing spot treatments using harsh chemicals, and as Fields says, “It would be like a dentist saying, ‘Don’t brush all of your teeth--just brush the tooth with the cavity.’ It didn’t make sense to us.”
They set out to create a product that they would want to prescribe to patients; one that looked at the face as a whole entity and combined cutting-edge medicine with the great scent and feel of a luxurious face cream. Their dream drove a brand that has helped millions, and we have reviewed their finest selection of products below!
Proactiv Skin Purifying Mask Review
The Proactiv+ Skin Purifying Mask really packs a punch with its impressive blend of ingredients and abilities. Its main component is sulfur (6%), which is a highly effective acne medicine. Sulfuric waters were popular in Ancient Rome as a way to achieve great skin. It can help heal older blemishes as well as prevent new ones from forming.
Another great ingredient in this mask is kaolin clay, which is a mineral that clarifies pores and soaks up excess oil. Vitamins E and F calm irritation and keep the skin moisturized, protected and nourished. It also has tea tree oil in it, which is an amazing natural antiseptic that gives the skin a really deep clean.
Geranium and lemongrass essential oils keep bacteria away and help reduce the appearance of scarring. You can also use this mask as a direct spot treatment -- we all love a good dual-action product!
There has been a recent surge in the popularity of cleansing brushes. A ton of new ones have been popping up all over the place as a result. The reason I prefer the Proactiv Face Deep Cleansing Brush is that a) It is very gentle so it won’t irritate the skin by over-exfoliating, and b) It is much more affordable than other similar products.
Not unlike an electric toothbrush, a rotating cleansing brush will assure that you’re getting a thorough, deep cleanse as opposed to a non-electric. The Proactiv Face Deep Cleansing Brush exfoliates the skin, removing dead skin cells to reveal the soft, bright skin that may be hiding underneath. This brush features two speeds, so you can customize based on skin sensitivity. The 360-degree rotation will give you that refreshed, super-clean feel every time, guaranteed!
The X Out products by Proactiv are perfect for teens, or anyone who wants a skincare routine that is as short and to the point as possible. X Out Wash-In Treatment is a deep cleanser that gets use twice daily. With one short lather + rinse, it cleanses, exfoliates, moisturizes, and refreshes the skin.
How does it manage all of that? Exfoliating beads within the formula combat excess oil and dead skin. Additionally, Vitamin F strengthens the lipid barrier which protects the skin and makes the skin look and feel healthier overall.
Finally, glycerin moisturizes the skin and menthol, or the “icy slap,” as they call it, refreshes and wakes up the skin. This one is also multi-use. Leave it on for 10 minutes and voila, it’s a mask. You can also use X Out as a spot treatment by applying to spots before bed. In our Proactiv company review, we cover a a specific theme, versatility.
Proactiv Blackhead Dissolving Gel Review
Proactiv Blackhead Dissolving Gel works by unclogging pores. It breaks down and extracts dirt and oil that sits below the skin’s surface. It lightly exfoliates with lactic acid and dissolves impurities with salicylic acid. Aloe vera and the silky texture of the gel help hydrate, soften and renew the skin. For anyone who suffers from stubborn and persistent blackheads, this gel is a no-brainer.

Proactiv Renewing Cleanser Review
The Proactiv Renewing Cleanser is the first step of the 3 step process. The renewing process cleanses the skin so that there is a clean slate for the next two steps to really penetrate and do their job. The active ingredient in the Renewing Cleanser is benzoyl peroxide (2.5%), which kills bacteria, preventing acne formation.
Magnesium Aluminum Silicate (exfoliating beads in English) help wash away dead skin cells so that skin can properly regenerate. Like the rest of the Proactiv line, the active ingredients are coupled with softening moisturizers. The result is a face that is clean, soft and acne-free.
Proactiv Revitalizing Toner Review
This toner, or Step-2 of the aforementioned 3-step process, is alcohol-free, oil-free, and fragrance-free. The effectiveness of the product begins with salicylic acid, which is incredibly effective in combating acne and exfoliating skin.
Also included in the formula is witch hazel, a light astringent which extracts oil from the skin’s surface and pores. Lastly, portulaca oleracea extract keeps the good, healthy oils and moisture in. Look on with equal parts horror and amazement as this product works its magic and visible grime and oil sticks to your cotton pad.
Proactiv Repairing Treatment Review
I’ve saved the best for last because this repairing treatment is quite possibly my favorite of all of these great products. The Proactiv repairing treatment lotion absorbs really nicely into my skin while making it look and feel great. The main ingredient, benzoyl peroxide, is micro-milled so it can really get in there, seeping deep into the skin to both clear problem areas and stop future breakouts from occurring. It also has moisturizing properties. It will work against acne all day long and leave your skin all velvety and smooth.
Proactiv has continued to grow its fan base since its inception with innovation that keeps the customer’s needs in mind and truly addresses them. In our Proactiv Company review we find their products have helped so many people struggling with acne and with kiosks all over the country, an interactive website, and a monthly subscription program, their products are just so easy and convenient to get your hands on!
Major bonus: they have a 60-day no-questions-asked refund policy if you’re not completely satisfied with the product, so you have nothing to lose and so much to potentially gain! Get Proactiv -- try Proactiv!
