Marc Jacobs Beauty Review: Not Just For Fashion Anymore

Published on Oct 24, 2017 in Cosmetics

I love makeup. And I love Marc Jacobs products. So it was kind of a given that I’d love Marc Jacobs makeup. Okay, so it could be that I’m just biased towards Marc Jacobs stuff – but after trying out Marc Jacobs beauty products, I think you’ll be hooked as well. It would be difficult not to be, because their beauty line is just about perfect, which is really hard to come by with makeup – especially if you’re as particular as I am.

It’s rare to find a company that specializes in one area, as Marc Jacobs has with fashion, only to see it seamlessly cross over into another, as Marc Jacobs has with makeup. Unique and impressive! Not happy with your current foundation, lip gloss, eyeliner or other makeup product? Read on to discover why Marc Jacobs should be your next beauty purchase. Even if you are happy with your current stuff, you’ll still love Marc Jacobs Beauty!

Marc Jacobs Background & History Explained

The Man Himself, Marc Jacobs

Marc Jacobs was founded by its namesake, Marc Jacobs, and his business partner, Robert Duffy in 1986. While studying in the Parson’s School of Design, Jacobs won three prestigious awards, Design Student of the Year, the Perry Ellis Gold Thimble Award, and the Chester Weinberg Gold Thimble Award, proving his talent even at his young age. His grandmother had helped him to hand-knit and design a range of sweaters, which were noticed by Barbara Weiser of the Charivari Boutique.

She ordered the first collection of sweaters for her boutique with the label Marc Jacobs for Marc and Barbara. The sweaters were also noticed by his now-business partner Robert Duffy, who was an executive at Reuben Thomas Inc., and who validated for him. The company gave Jacobs his first real job in the designing industry based on Duffy’s recommendation.

At first, Jacobs was working for Reuben Thomas Inc. as a designer for their Sketchbook label, but when the company closed its doors in 1985, he joined together with Robert Duffy and formed his own company, Marc Jacobs. The company released their first line with the now-famous Marc Jacobs label in 1986.

Soon afterwards, Marc Jacobs became (and still remains) the youngest designer to be awarded the Perry Ellis Award for New Fashion Talent. Since then, the company has flourished, and produces not only clothes but bags, accessories, beauty products, perfumes, shoes and other products which are popular worldwide.

The company is developing new cosmetics innovations all the time, so don’t expect its categories to be limited to the aforementioned ones for long!

Marc Jacobs Beauty Perfection Powder Featherweight Finish Review

Marc Jacobs Beauty Perfection Powder Featherweight Finish

I’m a big believer in a good foundation. While I definitely commiserate with those who strictly buy drugstore makeup (I own a fair few drugstore products myself – most of my makeup, actually) when it comes to foundation, I have no problem spending a little more to get a little more. Why? Because for your skin to look its best, you need to be using a truly superior product.

While I find that waterproof drugstore mascara can often last as long as expensive mascara, I haven’t found this to be the case when it comes to foundation. Also, maybe it’s just my skin, but when I use cheaper foundation, it comes out flaky and patchy and doesn’t have good coverage. The foundation you use can make or break your makeover. I can even tell when looking at pictures of myself when I’ve used bad foundation. Don’t even get me started on foundation that uses unsafe chemicals!

With that being said, let me tell you why you should be using Marc Jacobs Perfection Powder Featherweight Foundation. (Yep, the best things in life have the longest names. It’s like supercalifragilisticexpialidocious). Firstly, it can be used as your main foundation, because it offers amazing coverage. Keep in mind though, you may have to use a little more product for full coverage than your average liquid foundation. I don’t know why this is, but probably because it’s a powder, whereas I’m used to my liquid foundation. Even if you’ve already done your research and found your favorite foundation that works well with your skin, you can use this product on top to enhance your complexion and for touch-ups during the day.

As you may have guessed from the name, Perfection Powder Featherweight Finish is really lightweight and not clumpy like some other foundations that I’ve used. It’s especially great for oily skin because it has a matte finish that takes away the oil shine on your skin, and covers really well. It has anti-ageing and hydrating properties, so your skin gets a smooth and healthy look. It’s really worth the money, because you get a great product that lasts a while. I would rate it right up there with Physicians Formula foundation, which is some seriously high praise.

Marc Jacobs Beauty Lip Lock Moisture Balm Review

Marc Jacobs Beauty Lip Lock Moisture Balm

The MJ Lip Lock Moisture Balm is a beautiful product for those with dry lips. I’m quite prone to dry lips, so I’m always interested in hearing about new lip balms. I’ve used Vaseline in the past but I stopped because I can’t stand the taste, so it was awesome to see that this lip balm has a soft minty taste (the flavor is mild but definitely there). The texture is soft and buttery, so it’s kind of addictive (don’t say I didn’t warn you).

Its ingredients work well to hydrate your lips and add shine to them, and it gets brownie points for the awesome traditional bold packaging common to Marc Jacobs beauty products. Also, the balm has SPF 18, so it’s basically a yummy sunblock that makes your lips look great and feel even better. Win-win! Definitely prefer it to eos Lip Balm and Burt’s Bees, anyway.

Marc Jacobs Beauty Enamored Hi Shine Nail Lacquer Review

Marc Jacobs Beauty Enamored Hi Shine Nail Lacquer

The Marc Jacobs beauty line has so far failed to disappoint, and their nail polish line won’t be bucking the trend. The enamored Hi-Shine polish applies really easily, and after just one coat, your nails look great, although I’d recommend you do at least two for the maximum effect. The polish is opaque and not like those cheap ones where you have to apply a ton of polish to get rid of the sheer parts (although the lighter colors of the MJ line may be more see-through than its darker colors, and you might have to apply more polish for them).

After applying, your nails will have a gorgeous, plastic-shiny look, which is advertised as shining like “30 coats of lacquer”. The nail polish comes in tons of colors, from the safe and subtle to the bold and daring.

Marc Jacobs Beauty Dew Drops Coconut Gel Highlighter Review

So we’re back to good foundation products. The MJ Dew Drops Coconut Gel Highlighter is actually not strictly a foundation. It’s made to be mixed into your foundation and then applied to enhance the effects of your foundation and give your face a subtle, healthy glow. The great thing about this is that while it does give your face the glow it’s supposed to, it looks natural and not overdone. You can apply it to areas you want to emphasize, like your cheekbones – it does the perfect job.

You really only need a small amount for your face because it won’t be your main foundation, so even though it isn’t cheap it will last you a good while. It has a delicious coconut scent as well, and it feels just as amazing on your skin. Everything about this product is the perfect balance – it gives your skin a glow, it smells awesome – but nothing is overdone.

Marc Jacobs Beauty Highliner Matte Gel Crayon Review

Marc Jacobs Beauty Highliner Matte Gel Crayon

No makeover is complete without the perfect eyeliner. I usually spend the most time on my eyes, but even after I’ve spent I-won’t-tell-you-how-long on my eyeshadow, it still doesn’t look complete without a liner.

The MJ Highliner (I love that) Matte Gel Crayon has a super smooth texture and applies really easily. It looks great even after a long time – it’s waterproof, so it’ll get you through the whole day without any worries. I’ve seen it used on the waterline and it’s supposed to last really well even on the waterline without smudging, “bleeding” or disappearing. My eyes are smallish so I don’t use eyeliner on my waterline, but this eyeliner looks great on the lash line and also above the eye. It sets pretty fast, but you could smudge it right away if you want to create a smoky-eye look.

I also generally prefer crayon eyeliners to pencil because I find crayons easier to apply, so this was an exciting product for me. You can get the MJ liners in matte or shimmery, but the matte range is more my style. It comes in your standard brown and black colors like (Iron)y and (Earth)quake, as well as fun colors like (Pop)ular, which is a hot pink color, and Whirl(pool), which is teal.
