Clean Beauty For Self-Care: Care For Clean Skin

To truly look after ourselves inside and out we must be conscious of what we put in and on our body’s. This includes our beauty routines.  Clean beauty (the use of natural and ethical ingredients) is a fundamental aspect of our self-care journey.

1. Look After Yourself

Exercising is just one way to take care of yourself.

Beauty routines should be something that everyone enjoys doing. If we make the time to care for our skin, we feel good on the inside by looking good on the outside. (It’s not as superficial as it sounds, trust me!) An effective skin-care regime should be a therapeutic process. It’s essentially a way of looking after yourself.

This being true, the case for clean beauty seems to speak for itself. If self-care is about being kind to yourself, why would you pack your skin with chemicals? What we put on our skin is eventually absorbed into our bloodstreams. So, going for the natural, nourishing, eco and enviro-friendly option seems like a no-brainer to me.

2. Understand Yourself

It’s easier to understand your skin issues when you understand yourself.

Since going clean with my beauty routine I’ve been able to really understand my body. When I break out I know it’s not because of the products I’m using but because of a deeper problem. Using Chinese face mapping techniques, I’m able to figure out what’s going on inside my body when my skin flares up. Breaking out on your jawline is usually a hormonal issue related to stress, so I’ll try to get a few extra hours sleep or assess any possible hormonal imbalances.

The chin correlates to your stomach so breakout’s here might signify that it’s time for a cleanse or detox. Either way, by using clean products I know that my skin issues are internal rather than external, and I’m better armed to cope with them. Personally, knowing that I’m taking good care of my skin and understanding it on a cellular level, has improved my psychological and physical health exponentially.

3. Detoxify

Going the clean beauty route allows your skin to regularly detoxify. Instead of loading it with chemicals and skin-clogging substances, you allow your skin to not only breath but be truly nourished from within. This means that your products are able to draw out impurities and toxins effectively.

When I’m feeling a little sluggish I know that my body is in need of a detox. To me, this means getting super comfortable with ingredient labels and using products free of toxins to detox from the inside out. Instead of rolling my eyes, I embrace the fact that this is an opportunity to inject some self-care into my beauty routine. Things that make us feel good shouldn’t feel like a chore. Clean beauty nourishes our body from within – turn it into a ritual rather than a burden! Your skin, body, and soul will thank you for it.

4. Dirty Beauty Explained

When taking care of your skin, natural is the way to go.

I like to call anything that isn’t considered clean beauty ‘dirty beauty’. First of all, it throws people off nicely (nobody likes to think that what they’re putting onto their skin is gross). But most of all it shows people what unclean beauty really means. We wouldn’t put anything dirty on our skin -but we repeatedly do so.

Let’s look at a few of the biggest culprits so we know what to stay away from next time we’re reading the labels (yes, clean beauty will entail some excruciating label reading). Unfortunately, there’s very little regulation in the beauty industry, which is rife with greenwashing. Labels that include words like “toxin-free”, “clean” or “natural” are most likely decidedly not so. There’s no law over who can use these words and in what context.

5. Unclean Ingredients

First things first let me clarify: fragrance is not an ingredient. This is a loophole in ingredients descriptions to subtly label anything from scent or color to how it stays on your skin – this is your biggest toxin indicator. When I see “fragrance” on an ingredients label, I see a red flag. Next up are parabens and chemical sunscreen ingredients.

These ingredients have the potential to be endocrine disruptors which basically means that they mess with the endocrine system in our bodies that regulates its essential rhythms. These rhythms include our metabolism, reproductive processes, and mood. I don’t know about you, but I’ll pass, thanks.

And lastly, but in no way least, is the presence of carcinogens. It makes me shiver when I think that there are ingredients in our products today that contain cancer-inducing substances. The main ones to be aware of are formaldehyde, sodium hydroxymethylglycinate and DMDM hydantoin. Now that you’re aware of these dirty substances, clean beauty is just an ingredients label away!

Conclusion

Our skin is our largest organ, so why don’t we care for it properly? To really be caring for ourselves, we must first start with the products that we put in and on our bodies. This doesn’t only help us physically but emotionally – we are able to make real changes to our self-care routines. I know that when my beauty routine is clean I feel better from the outside-in. My rule of thumb when it comes to ingredients is ‘if you can’t read it, skip it’.
