Avon Mascara Review: Is Avon’s The Best Mascara In The Game?

Post Image

I have consistently struggled with mascara. I always want to wear it for special occasions or date night just to add some drama to my look, but I usually end up regretting it. The feeling of regret usually hits right around the time that I see my reflection later on into the night. I’m not sure what it is about my eyelashes, but mascaras, non-waterproof and waterproof alike, don’t seem to stay on. I always end up with what looks like dark circles under my eyes. Don’t even get me started on removing the mascara.

It will usually stay on my eyes for about 3 days until it’s fully off. Wearing mascara is actually a 3-day commitment for me that involves either looking like I haven’t slept in 5 days or that I’m rocking a “smokey” eye at 9am. So basically a win-win. Even though I’m probably the worst advocate for mascara, I still buy new ones in the hopes that it will be the answer to my prayers.

Mascara has come a long way since its humble roots in Egypt. It’s now offered in many different ways with different style brushes depending on your needs. Avon offers a wide range of different mascaras that provide different strokes for different folks, no pun intended. They are very focused on making sure that their customers find the best mascara for their needs.

On the page called “Find Your Flutter”, you can see a complete comprehensive breakdown of all the mascara’s they offer and what they’re best for. This breakdown really takes the guesswork out of buying online. It also comes with photos to show you exactly what the mascara looks like on your eyelashes. Let us begin, shall we?

Avon Mascara Line Breakdown

Woman with her eyes closed.

Length and volume in just one application.

Avon’s mascara line offers products that give instant length, weightless volume, and in general healthier looking lashes. With all of these options on offer, you’re sure to find the mascara you need at Avon! Even though the formula of mascara has pretty much stayed the same in the past 50 years (pigment, oil, wax, and preservatives), no mascara is like the other because of the different brushes. The two things you want to look for when buying a mascara is brush size and formula.

Even though there aren’t so many discrepancies in formulas, you may want a water-soluble mascara over an oil-soluble one, which will be the determining factor in how you remove it. There are about 24 different types of mascara brushes. Some for an everyday look and some for when you want that little extra glamour. Today, I’m going to give you the lowdown on 3 very different Avon mascaras.

Avon Mega Effects Mascara Review

You may have heard of this mascara because it’s kind of famous. This mascara is well known because of its unique style of brush, the “Wonderbrush” and how it is able to bend and adjust at different angles. It sort of looks like a wide paintbrush- not your typical mascara wand. The thickness of the brush allows for the brush to hit more of your lashes at one time.

I was a little nervous about putting this brush so close to my eyes since it’s bigger than the usual mascara brush, but to my surprise, it worked very well. It was just a bit uncomfortable holding it. It created a ton of volume and didn’t look flaky or anything like that. I feel it would be better if the adjustable handle was a tad longer for me to get a better grip. I also got a bit of mascara on my hand while pulling the brush out of the tube, which could be because it was my first time using it.

Unfortunately, you won’t be able to purchase it, since it has been discontinued. The Avon website recommends trying their “Love At First Lash” mascara if you liked “Mega Effects”. It is a nutrient-infused mascara containing lycopene, olive oil, and vitamin E. This new product claims to provide “instant length and weightless volume in just one application”. Avon recommends pairing it with their new lash serum as well.

The product leaves you with a very natural look if you just apply one layer but can be made more dramatic by putting more product on. The formula seems very lightweight and is probably worth a try if you liked Mega Effects.

Avon Supershock Mascara Review

Woman having mascara applied.

This product has a plumping formula meant to provide you with 7 times more volume with a weightless feel.

Before I talk about what this product can do for you let me just say that “super shock” may not be the best name for a mascara. All I can picture is someone getting electrocuted and their hair (eyelashes included) sticking up. But, maybe you want your lashes to look like they were super shocked? It may work for you! I know that when I wore it, I intended to super shock my boyfriend, and spoiler alert…He wasn’t shocked and didn’t even notice anything special.

This product has a plumping formula meant to provide you with 7 times more volume with a weightless feel. It comes with a helix brush with a zigzag design created to coat all lashes from root to tip. I personally was pretty happy with this product. It actually does have a weightless feel. I wear contacts and noticed it didn’t run into my eyes like other mascaras I have tried. Since it’s Avon’s volumizing mascara, I was hoping for more of a fullness, but I didn’t really see that. It did separate my lashes nicely though. After applying a few more coats, my lashes started to look a little spidery. I don’t think I’ll be using this mascara for any future date nights.

Avon Wash Off Waterproof Mascara Review

Now, this is something I haven’t seen before – a waterproof mascara that’s easy to take off. Could that even be possible? The packaging says that it can last all day and will be easy to wash off with soap and water. Anyone who wears waterproof mascara knows how difficult it is to remove even with makeup remover. And by “anyone”, I am referring to myself. I was so interested as to how this is possible so I did some research and looked into the product ingredients. Interestingly, it doesn’t contain any of the classic waterproof mascara ingredients such as petroleum distillate, polyethylene, carnauba wax, pentaerythrityl hydrogenated rosinate, and tall oil glycerides.

The strange part is that it does contain common ingredients for water-soluble mascara, aka, non-waterproof mascara. A couple of its ingredients are water, glyceryl stearate, ammonium acrylates copolymer, which are all found in water-soluble mascaras. This makes me even more unsure about the product claims that it is waterproof because while I’m sure it is easy to wash off I’m not convinced that it can last you through a wedding. I’m no chemist, so maybe there is an ingredient in it that makes it more permanent than other water-soluble mascaras.

I put it to the test and I wore it to a wedding. I didn’t really know the couple, I was just my boyfriends +1. Even though I thought I wouldn’t, I did tear up a bit while the couple recited their vows and my eyelashes stayed looking fly, if I do say so myself. I don’t know if I would be able to say the same after my sister or best friend’s wedding, but it did its job for this particular occasion. Therefore, the jury is still out on this one. I may be too afraid to try it out for a real tear-jerker.

Avon Superextend Mascara Review

This is a serious question. Do your eyelashes grow? I don’t feel like mine do. I will occasionally see one that fell out onto my face, but I don’t see shorter ones and longer ones, the lashes I have are basically the same lashes I’ve had since I was a kid, right? Yeah, not exactly. Eyelashes grow in pretty slowly. It could take 1-6 months for eyelashes to grow back. Many use serums of some sort to help speed it up but this “Superextend” mascara has special ingredients so you don’t need those expensive serums.

Avon Superextend mascara is geared toward making your lashes look healthier. It’s applied with an ultra soft flexi-brush that allows you to apply the product without tugging or pulling on your lashes. It’s enriched with vitamin E, coconut oil, and argan oil to make lashes feel healthier and look longer. Coconut oil and argan oil are really great for lashes. Rumor has it that coconut oil will actually help your lashes grow quicker, while argan oil helps them stay strong and not break. Sounds like a winning combination if you ask me.

I really enjoyed applying this mascara since I knew it had such wonderful ingredients. I also liked how natural it looked, almost as if I wasn’t wearing any. The real exciting part was that I saw my sister a couple of hours after putting on the mascara and she complimented my lashes! My sister doesn’t just throw out compliments, so you know Avon’s Superextend is doing something right. This may be my new go-to mascara!

Avon Clinical Eye Lift Review: Is Avon’s Eye Cream Right For You?

Conclusion

As probably the worst advocate for mascara, I really enjoyed trying these. They were all very different from one another. Mascara can be extremely helpful in achieving your dream look. I’m going to leave you with two tips before I go. One: when applying the mascara, don’t pump the wand into the bottle. It only forces air into the bottle which will cause bacteria to multiply. Two: be gentle when you’re removing it. Don’t try to do it quickly. Rubbing off eye makeup too quickly will only cause you to rip out your lashes and no one wants that.

With all this in mind, I’m really excited to continue using some of these and for all the future compliments! Whether you’re looking for a waterproof mascara or a subtle natural lash, Avon’s extensive range might just have the formula for you. From the Superextend to the Supershock, you have a Superb (sorry, I had to) multitude of options to choose from.
